![]() There has never been any visible indication on Book Depository’s website that it is owned by Amazon, an approach that Amazon has taken with other similar acquisitions such as Goodreads, a social reading platform that it bought in 2013. Since the acquisition, Amazon has done little to integrate Book Depository from a branding perspective. ![]() Despite industry protests, the acquisition was approved by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) at the time, with the OFT stating that Book Depository wasn’t a true competitor due to its relative size. Book Depository was founded in Gloucester, UK in 2004 and was a small-scale competitor to Amazon’s online bookselling business, shipping books to readers in over 100 countries. ![]() The move comes as part of a wider series of cutbacks at the company, which has seen two rounds of layoffs affecting at least 27,000 employees across various divisions, including its AWS cloud unit and its devices and books businesses. Amazon has announced that it will be closing Book Depository, an online bookstore that it acquired in 2011.
